Arsene Wenger has struggled to find a regular pairing in the middle of the park this season.
The Gunners boss has been deprived of Santi Cazorla's services since October, Granit Xhaka has taken a while to adapt to the pace of English football while Francis Coquelin has been ruled out for the next four weeks.
"It's always the problem in central midfield," Gale said on Sky Sports.
"Cazorla's out for a long, long time and he was playing there but we always said they needed these big, strong players in there.
"Xhaka's come in. Yeah, he's' done well but he's given quite a few penalties away in the process.
"But for me they still need quality central midfield players, really stand-up men in the middle of the park.
"Chelsea have it - Matic, Kante - you look at Wanyama last night, you look at Dembele and then you look at Arsenal and think not as solid, a bit soft."
